Gun shops can be an intimidating environment for those who are unfamiliar with them. Especially if you're new to handling firearms, you may find that visiting your local gun shop makes you nervous. The good news is that there's no reason to be uncomfortable. In fact, with a few key tips, you can be sure that your visit to the local gun shop is a positive one. Here are some of the things that you should keep in mind when you go to the gun shop for the first time.

Only Look At One At A Time

For safety and loss prevention purposes, it's best to only have one firearm out on the counter at a time. Even if there are a couple that you want to look at, you should always allow them to put the first one away before getting the next one. That way, you don't risk any potential thieves or issues. 

As a result, be prepared to take some time in the shop. Don't think that you can just go in and choose something in minutes. You'll want to take the time to look at several different options to find the right one for your needs.

Don't Dry-Fire Weapons

When you look at guns in your local gun shop, the models you're handed should be unloaded. Make sure that each weapon is clear of ammo before you handle it, and then again before you give it back to the employee. However, since you're looking at guns without any ammo in them, you should avoid pulling the trigger on any of the guns that you're looking at.

If there's a gun that you particularly like, you may want to ask the gun shop staff if there's a test firing range that you can use to see how it fires. That way, you can gauge the trigger pull and the recoil on the gun.

Properly Store Any Guns You're Bringing To The Shop

If you're going to the local gun shop to have a gun you own repaired, or to see if they will buy it, make sure that you properly store that gun before you bring it in the store. Don't just go into the store with the gun out in the open. Instead, store it in a case where it is secured and free of ammo. Make sure the weapon is cleared before you put it into the case, and check it again when you open the case again.
